Régis Alain Barbier
Régis Alain Barbier may surprise people who have absorbed the idea of a “guru” as a bearded gentlemen in a light tunic and with a gentle voice. Or those who imagine a shaman, the holder of esoteric knowledge and supernatural powers. However, a concern with clichés – such as is ingrained in the mass media – does not exist among the interests that guide the actions of this philosopher, physician, endocrinologist, acupuncturist, lecturer, writer, former professor, founder and president of the Ayahuasca Pantheist Society (Sociedade Panteísta Ayahuasca- SPA) and of the Pantheist Universe Institute (Instituto Universo Panteísta- IUP).
There are no descriptive frameworks or diverse opinions that can truly replace being in the company of Régis Barbier. A gentleman of exemplary eloquence and vibrant rhetoric, Régis Alain Barbier personifies the good oratory which the ancient Greeks valued and which today it is rare to see, even on the academic circuit.
Born in Besançon, France, in 1952, Regis exudes youthfulness, clarity, playfulness, generosity and reverence for Mother Nature. As he himself jokes: “The Divine has no gender. But if it had, it would be Feminine!“ He arrived in Recife, northeastern Brazil, at the age of 20 and, enchanted by the place, never left. Among his professional accomplishments, we can highlight the title of Specialist in Acupuncture from the Brazilian College of Acupuncture, the title of Specialist in Endocrinology and Metabolism from the Society for Endocrinology and Brazilian Metabology, AMB; his position as assistant professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (Kinesiology and Kinesiotherapy); his degree in philosophy from the Philosophy College of St. Michael the Archangel (Anapolis – GO); his certificate of conclusion of a course in Ancient Philosophy sponsored by The Stoic Foundation, in London, Britain; his specialization and postgraduation in Clinical Philosophy from the Institute Packter in Porto Alegre.
His particular philosophical interests revolve around Stoicism, Epicureanism, Spinozism, pre-Socratic philosophy, phenomenology, metaphysics, existentialism and macroeconomics (Austrian School of Economics).
He has written several articles in the medical and philosophical field, and has published four books:
- From Habilis to Sapiens – The Anamnesis of a crisis (1998),
- Pantheism – The Religiosity of the Present (2009),
- Anthropology – existential Science and Art (2010)
- Essence and Metaphysical Perspective in Psychotherapy – Psychodynamic and Cosmo-existential approach, a new matrix ‘(2011).
The newly-founded Pantheist Universe Institute (iUP) is not aimed at a particular class of individuals. The iUP is dedicated anyone who recognizes nature as it is, rooted in cosmic oneness; to those who know that to opine about existence, the world and life is, first of all, to opine about ourselves.
The IPU encourages the cultivation of a central self-esteem, a fundamental confidence in our own points-of-view, values and intuitions; and the integrating of experience in the present moment, the here and now, guided by the virtues of Pantheist principles.
Régis Alain Barbier, along with the director of the Institute’s committee and all its members, wishes to contribute to the resolution of the undeniable existential crisis in which human ‘civilization’ is bogged down, helping to build a cosmo-synergistic, heliotropic and eco-humanistic society.
